Phantom not connecting to a dApp: causes and fixes
When Phantom will not connect, the usual causes are another wallet extension grabbing the request, opening the site in Safari or Chrome on your phone instead of Phantom's in-app browser, or an extension that needs a restart. Set Phantom as your Default App Wallet, hard-refresh the page, and on mobile open the site from the search bar inside Phantom.
Quick steps
- Restart and unlock. Quit and reopen the browser, unlock Phantom, then reload the dApp.
- Set Default App Wallet. In the Phantom extension open Settings, then Preferences, and choose Phantom under Default App Wallet.
- Hard-refresh the page. Press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac so the site picks up the new default wallet.
- Use the in-app browser on mobile. On a phone, open the site from the search bar inside the Phantom app, not from Safari or Chrome.
- Reconnect the site. Remove the site under Settings, Connected Apps, then connect again and choose the correct account.
- Reset as a last resort. If errors continue, reset Phantom only after confirming your recovery phrase or login backup.
A connection only shares your public address with a site and lets it ask you to approve things. It does not move funds. That is why it is worth checking the address bar before you connect: fake sites that copy real dApps are common, and connecting is the first step of most wallet drains.
Quick fixes by symptom
| Symptom | Try this |
|---|---|
| No Phantom popup appears (extension) | Quit and reopen the browser, unlock Phantom, then try again. Use Chrome or Brave; Phantom says Safari is not supported. |
| MetaMask or another wallet opens instead | Set Phantom as Default App Wallet, then hard-refresh the page. |
| "Failed app interaction", "Couldn't connect" or stuck on "Connecting" | Quit and reopen the browser and retry. If it continues, reset Phantom (only with your recovery phrase backed up). |
| Phantom shows "null" when connecting | Restart the browser; if it only happens on one site, clear that site's cookies and cache. |
| On mobile, the site asks you to download Phantom | You are in an outside browser. Open the site inside Phantom instead. |
| Connected, but the site shows the wrong account or network | Switch account in Phantom, then disconnect and reconnect the site. |
The error names above come from Phantom's own help article on connecting to apps (Phantom help centre, 2026).
Several wallet extensions fighting each other
Most Ethereum-style apps talk to "the" browser wallet through one shared connection point. When Phantom, MetaMask, Rabby or Coinbase Wallet are all installed, they compete for it, and the one that loads first can win. Phantom explains this in its post on using Phantom with EVM apps (Phantom blog, 2023) and in a help article on using the extension alongside other wallets.
Phantom's fix is a setting called Default App Wallet:
- Open the Phantom extension and click your profile avatar in the upper left.
- Go to Settings, then Preferences.
- Under Default App Wallet, choose Phantom, or Always Ask if you want to pick each time.
- Hard-refresh the dApp:
Ctrl+Shift+Ron Windows orCmd+Shift+Ron Mac. A normal refresh may keep the old wallet.
Phantom notes that some apps still prefer another installed wallet, and that if an app only lists MetaMask, clicking MetaMask may open Phantom when Phantom is your default (Phantom help centre, 2026). If the conflict will not go away, Phantom's other suggestion is to keep each wallet in its own Chrome profile.
On Solana dApps the conflict is rarer, because most Solana sites show a list of wallets and you pick Phantom by name. If the list does not include Phantom, the site may not detect the extension: restart the browser and check the extension is enabled on your browser's extensions page.
Connecting on the Phantom mobile app
Phantom's help centre is clear on this: on a phone, connecting works only inside Phantom's in-app browser, not in Safari, Chrome or other mobile browsers (Phantom help centre, 2026). Those browsers may just show a "download Phantom" prompt.
- Open Phantom and tap the search bar at the bottom.
- Type the dApp's exact address or name, and check the result is the real site.
- Tap Connect on the site, choose Phantom, review the request and approve.
Switching accounts inside the in-app browser disconnects you from the site, so reconnect after switching.
Trusted apps and auto-connect
After you approve a site once, Phantom remembers it. Phantom's developer docs call these trusted apps: a trusted site can reconnect on later visits without a popup (Phantom developer docs, 2026). That is convenient, but it also means an old approval keeps working until you remove it.
To review or remove them, open your profile avatar, then Settings, then Connected Apps. Select a site and choose Disconnect, or use the three-dot menu for Disconnect from all, or Revoke permissions for all. Connected Apps lists are separate for the extension and the mobile app.
Disconnecting does not cancel token approvals you signed on Ethereum, Base, Polygon or other EVM networks. Those stay valid until you revoke them separately. If you connected to a site you now distrust, revoke both. See is Phantom wallet safe for how approvals work.
Error codes shown by dApps
Some sites show a number instead of a message. Phantom's developer docs list these for its Ethereum-style provider (Phantom developer docs, 2026):
| Code | Name | What to do |
|---|---|---|
4001 | User Rejected Request | You cancelled. Try again if you meant to approve. |
4100 | Unauthorized | The site has not been approved for that account. Reconnect and pick the right account. |
4900 | Disconnected | Phantom could not reach the network. Check your internet or VPN and Phantom's status. |
-32002 | Requested resource not available | A Phantom approval window is already open. Find it, finish or reject it, then retry. |
-32603 | Internal Error | Something failed inside Phantom. Restart and retry; if it persists, contact support via help.phantom.com. |
Bitcoin apps
Phantom deprecated the provider that let Bitcoin apps connect to the extension in June 2026 (Phantom developer docs, 2026), so a Bitcoin dApp asking to connect to Phantom may not work. You can still hold, send and receive bitcoin, but Phantom says it no longer supports Ordinals, rare sats or BRC-20 tokens (Phantom help centre, 2026). See Phantom Bitcoin wallet.
Before you connect
- Reach dApps from your own bookmarks, not from search ads, DMs or replies on X.
- If Phantom shows a warning on the connect screen, stop and read what Phantom's dApp warnings mean.
- No real site needs your recovery phrase to connect. A page that asks for it is a scam.
Frequently asked questions
Why does MetaMask open when I click Phantom?
Both wallets compete for the same browser connection. Set Phantom as Default App Wallet in Phantom's Preferences and hard-refresh the page, or keep each wallet in a separate browser profile.
Can I connect Phantom using Safari or Chrome on my phone?
No. Phantom's help centre says connecting on mobile works only inside Phantom's in-app browser. Open the site from the search bar in the app.
Does disconnecting a site revoke its token approvals?
No. Disconnecting stops the site seeing your account, but EVM token approvals stay valid until you revoke them separately.
Is it safe to connect to any site?
Connecting alone does not move funds, but it is the first step of most drains. Only connect to sites you reached from a trusted bookmark, and read every approval.
Why does a site reconnect without asking?
Phantom remembers sites you approved before as trusted apps. Remove a site under Settings, Connected Apps to make it ask again.
