How to install the Phantom Wallet browser extension

The Phantom extension is installed from the Chrome Web Store; its official ID is bfnaelmomeimhlpmgjnjophhpkkoljpa. Chrome is the only fully supported browser. Brave, Edge and Opera can run the same extension but Phantom does not guarantee them, and Firefox, Safari and Tor are not supported.

Quick steps

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store listing. Type phantom.com/download into the address bar and choose the Chrome option, or search for Phantom in the Chrome Web Store. On Edge, allow extensions from other stores when asked.
  2. Check the extension ID. The listing address must end in bfnaelmomeimhlpmgjnjophhpkkoljpa. If it does not, close the page.
  3. Add the extension. Click the button to add it to your browser and confirm the permissions prompt.
  4. Pin Phantom to the toolbar. Click the puzzle-piece extensions icon and pin Phantom so you can open it with one click and spot fake pop-ups.
  5. Create or import a wallet. Phantom opens a setup tab. Create a new wallet and write the recovery phrase on paper, or import an existing wallet.
  6. Set a strong password. Choose a password that unlocks Phantom on this browser. It is separate from your recovery phrase and does not replace it.

The Phantom browser extension lets you use Phantom on a computer and connect it to crypto websites. It is also one of the most faked pieces of crypto software: copies of the Chrome Web Store page and "Firefox versions" are common in search results. This guide shows how to install the real one and check it.

Which browsers work (October 2026)

BrowserStatus (Phantom help centre)Where to install
Google ChromeFully supportedChrome Web Store
BraveCompatible, not guaranteedChrome Web Store
Microsoft EdgeCompatible, not guaranteedChrome Web Store (Phantom does not publish to Edge Add-ons)
OperaCompatible, not guaranteedChrome Web Store version
FirefoxNot supported; no longer receives updatesNone. The add-on's last version, 25.16.0, dates from 7 May 2025
Safari, TorNot supportedNone

Phantom says it does not publish directly to the Brave, Opera or Edge stores, cannot guarantee the same stability or performance on them, and suggests switching to Chrome if you run into problems. The official Chrome Web Store extension ID is bfnaelmomeimhlpmgjnjophhpkkoljpa.

Moving from Firefox or Safari

Phantom's own Firefox add-on page now says Phantom "is no longer supported on Firefox and will not receive any new updates" and Phantom's help centre recommends moving to Chrome (or you can use the mobile app). We could not find the exact date support ended; the last update is dated 7 May 2025. An unsupported wallet misses security fixes and new networks, such as BNB Chain, added on 1 October 2026. Any "new Firefox version of Phantom" or Safari extension offered on a website is fake.

To move:

  1. Find your recovery phrase. Without it you cannot restore the wallet elsewhere.
  2. Install Phantom on Chrome (or the mobile app) following the steps on this page.
  3. Choose to import an existing wallet and enter your recovery phrase in the real Phantom extension only.
  4. Check that your balances and accounts appear, then remove the Firefox add-on.

How to check an extension you already have

  1. Type chrome://extensions, brave://extensions or edge://extensions into the address bar.
  2. Turn on Developer mode. Each extension now shows its ID.
  3. Compare the ID under Phantom with bfnaelmomeimhlpmgjnjophhpkkoljpa, or paste it into our download checker.

If the ID is different, remove the extension at once. If you created or imported a wallet in it, treat the recovery phrase as compromised and follow what to do if your wallet was drained. If you find two Phantom extensions installed, keep only the one with the official ID.

About the permissions

When you install it, the browser warns that Phantom can read and change data on websites. A wallet needs this to detect when a site asks to connect and to show its own pop-up. It is normal for wallet extensions, but it is also why a fake extension is so dangerous. Keep other extensions to a minimum, and remove any you no longer use.

Real and fake Phantom pop-ups

When a site asks to connect or sign, the real Phantom opens a separate small window whose address begins with chrome-extension://. It can be moved and resized. In 2025, Scam Sniffer reported fake Phantom windows drawn inside web pages that ask for the recovery phrase (Cointelegraph, February 2025). If a "Phantom" window cannot leave the browser tab, or it asks for your phrase, close the tab.

Tips for using the extension safely

  • Pin it. Open Phantom from the toolbar icon rather than from links on websites.
  • Keep it updated. Browsers update extensions automatically. Phantom never asks for your recovery phrase to update.
  • Use a Ledger for larger amounts. The extension supports Ledger over USB; Phantom's help centre lists the Nano S, Nano S Plus, Stax and Flex for the extension. See Phantom with Ledger.
  • Use a separate browser profile for crypto, with only the extensions you need.
  • Review connected sites. Phantom's settings show which sites are connected; remove ones you no longer use.
  • Lock it when you are done. The password protects the wallet on this computer. It cannot restore the wallet elsewhere; only the recovery phrase can.
  • Get help inside the extension. Phantom's support chat is built in. Phantom has no phone line.

If the extension is not working

If the pop-up does not open, a site will not connect or balances look wrong, see Phantom not working and Phantom not connecting to a site. Other wallet extensions installed at the same time can interfere with the connection, and on Brave, Edge or Opera, Phantom suggests trying Chrome. Removing and reinstalling Phantom does not delete your funds, which live on the blockchain, but you need your recovery phrase to restore the wallet afterwards. Make sure you have it before you remove anything.

Next steps

Once installed, follow how to set up Phantom. To use the same wallet on your phone, see the Phantom mobile app. Remember: Phantom never asks for your recovery phrase, and has no phone support.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official Phantom extension ID?

bfnaelmomeimhlpmgjnjophhpkkoljpa in the Chrome Web Store. The same listing is used on Chrome, Brave, Edge and Opera.

Does Phantom work on Firefox?

No. Phantom's Firefox add-on page says it is no longer supported and will not receive new updates. Its last version dates from May 2025.

Is Phantom available in the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store?

No. Phantom does not publish to the Edge Add-ons store. Edge can install the official extension from the Chrome Web Store; treat any Edge-store listing named Phantom as fake.

Does Phantom work on Safari?

No. Phantom lists Safari as unsupported. On a Mac use Chrome; on iPhone use the Phantom app and its built-in browser.

Will removing the extension delete my crypto?

No. Your crypto is on the blockchain. Removing the extension deletes the wallet from that browser, so you need your recovery phrase to restore it.

Can I use the extension and the app with the same wallet?

Yes. Import the same recovery phrase into each, or sign in with the same Google or Apple account if you created your wallet that way.
