How to import a MetaMask wallet into Phantom

Export your Secret Recovery Phrase (or a single account's private key) from MetaMask, then use Phantom's option to import a recovery phrase or private key. Check that the Ethereum address in Phantom matches the one in MetaMask. Phantom only shows supported networks, so funds on chains like Arbitrum or Optimism will not appear.

Quick steps

  1. Decide whether to import or send. If you only need the funds in Phantom, sending them to a new Phantom wallet avoids putting one phrase in two apps.
  2. Reveal the MetaMask recovery phrase. In MetaMask's security settings or account details, enter your password and hold the reveal button, then write the words on paper.
  3. Open Phantom's import option. On the welcome screen choose the existing-wallet option, or add an account from Settings, and choose to import a recovery phrase.
  4. Enter the phrase and select accounts. Type the words in order and choose which accounts to add.
  5. Compare the addresses. Check each Ethereum address in Phantom against MetaMask character by character.
  6. Import extra accounts by private key. For MetaMask accounts that were themselves imported, export each private key and import it in Phantom with Ethereum selected.
  7. Set the default wallet. In Phantom's preferences, choose whether Phantom is the default for EVM apps, then hard-refresh sites.

Many people use MetaMask for Ethereum and add Phantom later, or want one wallet for both Solana and EVM networks. You can bring a MetaMask wallet into Phantom by importing its recovery phrase or a private key. Before you do, it is worth knowing what moves across, what does not, and whether importing is the right choice at all. Steps reflect MetaMask's and Phantom's help centres as of October 2026.

Import or just send? Choose first

Importing puts the same keys into two apps. That is convenient, but it doubles the places where the phrase is exposed. If you only want your funds in Phantom, a cleaner option is to create a new Phantom wallet and send your tokens to it from MetaMask.

If you suspect your MetaMask phrase was exposed, do not import it anywhere. Move the funds to a new wallet instead.

Step 1: export the recovery phrase from MetaMask

In the MetaMask extension, the recovery phrase is in the security settings, under the section for managing wallet recovery, or via the account menu under account details. MetaMask asks for your password and makes you press and hold a button to reveal the words. On mobile, it is under account details. MetaMask cannot recover a lost phrase and warns never to share it (MetaMask support, 2026).

Write the 12 words on paper. Do not paste them into chats, notes or websites, including anything that claims to be a "migration tool". Neither MetaMask nor Phantom offers an online migration form.

Step 2: import it into Phantom

If Phantom is new, choose the option for people who already have a wallet on the welcome screen (on mobile, it sits under the extra options) and import a recovery phrase. If you already use Phantom, open your profile avatar, go to Settings, open account management, add an account and choose to import a recovery phrase. Type the words in order.

Phantom then lists accounts with past activity so you can pick which to add. A MetaMask wallet with several accounts may show several entries. Accounts you skip are not deleted.

Step 3: check that the addresses match

Compare the Ethereum address of each account in Phantom with the one in MetaMask, character by character. Phantom's standard path for Ethereum, Base and Polygon accounts is m/44'/60'/0'/0/ followed by the account number (Phantom help centre, 2026). That is the standard path MetaMask uses for accounts created from its phrase, so they should line up. Our address checker can compare two addresses side by side.

If an address does not match:

  • Check that you imported the right phrase. A different valid phrase opens a different wallet.
  • Accounts you imported into MetaMask with a private key are not part of the phrase. Import them separately (next step).
  • Add more accounts in Phantom. Empty accounts may not appear automatically.

Phantom also creates Solana and Bitcoin addresses from the same phrase. If you used Solana inside MetaMask, do not assume the Solana address is the same; compare it before sending anything.

Alternative: import one account with a private key

To move a single MetaMask account, export its private key from MetaMask's account details, entering your password and holding the reveal button (MetaMask support, 2026). In Phantom, add an account, choose to import a private key, select Ethereum as the network and paste the key. Choosing the wrong network causes a format error. Private key accounts do not sync to your other devices, so import the key on each device where you need it, and back it up separately.

What appears in Phantom and what does not

  • Appears: balances on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, BNB Chain (supported since 1 October 2026), HyperEVM, Robinhood Chain and Arc, if those networks are turned on.
  • Does not appear: tokens on networks Phantom does not support, such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, Linea and Unichain, or custom networks you added in MetaMask. Phantom does not allow custom networks. The funds are still there; Phantom's help centre suggests using an EVM wallet that supports that network to reach them.
  • Not copied: MetaMask settings, custom token lists, site connections and token approvals. Approvals live on the blockchain and still apply to the address, so review and revoke old ones you no longer need.

Using MetaMask and Phantom in the same browser

Both extensions try to answer when a site asks for an Ethereum wallet. Phantom has a setting under preferences for the default wallet used with EVM apps: you can make Phantom the default or have it ask each time. After changing it, do a hard refresh of the site. If sites keep opening the wrong wallet, Phantom suggests using a separate browser profile for each wallet (Phantom help centre, 2026). See Phantom not connecting for other fixes.

After importing

Your MetaMask backup now protects funds in two apps. If you decide to stay with Phantom only, you can remove MetaMask from the browser, but keep the phrase backed up offline. Never type it into a site that claims to "verify" or "sync" your wallets. For a feature comparison, see Phantom vs MetaMask.

Frequently asked questions

Will my MetaMask address be the same in Phantom?

For accounts created from your MetaMask recovery phrase, Phantom uses the same standard Ethereum path, so the addresses should match. Always compare them before sending funds.

Why are my Arbitrum or Optimism tokens missing in Phantom?

Phantom does not support those networks or custom networks. The tokens are still on-chain and can be accessed with a wallet that supports the network.

Can I import MetaMask into the Phantom mobile app?

Yes. Use the import recovery phrase option on the welcome screen or in account settings, the same as in the extension.

Is it safe to have the same phrase in MetaMask and Phantom?

Both are widely used wallets, but every extra app is another place the phrase could leak. If you only need the funds, sending them to a new Phantom wallet is cleaner.

Does importing move my funds?

No. Importing only gives Phantom access to the same addresses. Nothing is sent, and there is no fee.
